My first car I purchased for $100. Now before you tell me that it must have been rubbish or was going to require thousands in repairs, or believe that a family member or friend cut me a deal, let me put those thoughts to rest. It ran great, all electric windows, locks, moon-roof, radio, lights etc. worked. The engine never had any issues for the time I owned it, and the only money I ever put into it were for oil and gas and a $40 motor mount I installed myself. The man I bought it from I found on Craigslist. What else? It got 25 mpg average, had chrome plating, leather seats, and a turbo. All that for $100? Yes my fine friends, $100.
Now why do I tell you this? What purpose could my information about my $100 car serve? Simply to prove that it's possible. Now yes $100 is nothing for a car, and you might say I got lucky, which I did, but it's possible and though you might have to pay a little more than $100, you definitely never have to pay more $10,000. Or $5000, or $2000 for that matter. In fact to further prove this point I bring to the stand my second car.
$650. Car number two cost me $650. How did I find it? Craigslist. Ya I had to scrub it a little, and vacuum it down, but the only real issue when I bought it was that the top needed to be replaced. Total Cost $220, and a few hours of work on my part. Get's 26mpg in the city, 35 hwy, and a 30mpg average for me.
And that was just my first two cars. I've owned a Jeep Cherokee, Isuzu Trooper, another Miata, Dodge Neon, Chevy Nova, Volvo V70 AWD, Honda CRV and more.
But enough about my cars. What else have I done in life? Traveled Europe for 3 months, owned a sailboat, bought a several thousand dollar wedding ring for a 5th the original cost, had countless laptops, iPods, computers, video games systems, TVs, and a book and movie collection that is bigger than any family members or friends I know. All of this, by 22 years old working just a minimum wage job and no college degree.
